Media Converter / Switch, Multimode Gigabit, 10/100/1000BaseTX to 1000BaseFX (LC) Four Copper Ethernet ports, Two Fiber Optic SFP Ports

The ME-3860-MM3-SFP2 (multimode) media converter transfers data over duplex fiber at 1000Mbps (at 850nm or 1300nm) and connects to copper Ethernet at 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps while auto-sensing the correct speed. Maximum distance for this unit over fiber depends upon the SFP module and the type of fiber used. With a 850nm multimode SFP (SX), the distance is typically 300 meters on 62.5u fiber, 550 meters on 50u fiber, and 1km on 50u OM3 (aqua) fiber. With a 1300/1310nm multimode SFP (LX), the distance is typically 550 meters on 62.5u, 50u, or 50u OM3 (aqua) fiber. There are other variations of these fibers which allow greater distances. Distance on the Ethernet side is 100 meters (328 feet) using Cat-5 or better (unshielded or shielded twisted pair) copper cable. The fiber connections are LC on an inserted SFP module and the copper Ethernet connection is RJ-45.

This unit includes one multimode (10/100/1000, 850nm) SFP module. An additional SFP module may be ordered for the second SFP port to further extend the fiber optic network beyond this media converter. Order additional SFPs here.

This unit has four RJ ports for copper Ethernet connections and two ports that accept SFP mini-GBIC modules. This allows the unit to act as a small Ethernet switch as well as a media converter. An example of this use would be to run a longer fiber link from your server/router to an open office location, and then you are able to connect the media converter to four local computers. You would also be able to then run another fiber link, from a SFP module in the second SFP port to another similar unit and serve another group of computers, printers, etc. To use the second SFP port, you would have to buy another SFP module, which we can sell separately.

OPTIONS

You should choose a wavelength (850nm or 1300nm) that matches the device to which this unit will connect at the other end of the fiber link. If you are buying devices for both ends of the link at this time, then choose the wavelength which will give you the least attenuation (signal loss) over your fiber run. This would be 1300nm for 62.5u fiber, and 850nm for 50u fiber. If you are also buying the fiber at the same time, your best combination is 850nm for your multimode media converters and OM3 fiber (50u, 10Gb, “Aqua”). All our cables use Corning glass and they call this grade of glass “Infinicor SX+”.

Don’t be confused by the “1300nm” vs “1310nm” terminology. Multimode actually uses 1300nm wavelength and singlemode used 1310nm, but because they are functionally so close, the terms tend to be used interchangeably.
